The Crown 45RPM Adapter Archive — The Origin of UPSETTERS®

The Crown 45RPM record adapter is where the story of UPSETTERS® begins. Before streetwear, before SlipRugs and before the wider brand world, there was an object: a functional 45RPM adapter approached as Product Art.

The origin: the Product First

From the beginning, UPSETTERS® has used one message: “the Product First.” The product must stand on its own before promotion, trend or category. The Crown adapter expressed that idea through material, form, finish and the physical ritual of playing a 7-inch record.

Made in Japan 45RPM craftwork

The Crown was developed as a premium Made-in-Japan record accessory and as a crafted object for vinyl culture. Rather than hiding a small functional component, UPSETTERS® made the adapter itself part of the visual and tactile experience of the turntable.

Early numbered limited editions

Earlier Crown releases were sold in limited, individually numbered editions, including 45/45 editions. Those releases are part of the brand’s archive and history. They do not create a permanent rule that every future UPSETTERS® product must be limited to 45 pieces.

Rarity without a fixed formula

For UPSETTERS®, scarcity should follow the work. A future edition may be limited by material, process, collaboration, production capacity or concept. The principle is not a fixed number. The principle is to avoid treating Product Art like anonymous mass-market goods.

From record accessory to street luxury

The Crown established the language that now expands into SlipRugs, future record adapters, apparel and other physical objects. Streetwear is an extension of the world, while the origin remains premium 45RPM accessories, craftwork and Product Art.

Culture behind the object

The cultural foundation is sound system culture, dub and reggae, together with vinyl and 7-inch record culture. UPSETTERS® translates those influences through a Japanese approach to product design, detail and physical objects.

UPSETTERS®

Tokyo, Japan. “the Product First.”
